10 WAYS LEARNING SALSA IS CHANGING ME

I’ve always been fascinated with learning about other cultures- two years ago when  Ricky Martin’s La Mordita song was a constant on my playlist, I was being influenced by everything Latin American- including binge watching Narcos, Jane the Virgin, picking up a few Spanish words, and falling in love with Mexican food, their music, dance and carefree attitude. So it was a natural decision when I wanted to work on my health and do something fun whilst at it- I decided to enrol for Salsa classes. Tried persuading my hubby to join the same with no avail and I decided to do it alone.
It’s been almost a year since I have been learning Salsa and it’s one of the best life changing decisions I made. Tell you  why

          1.   STEPPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE

I’m so at ease
  • talking to 1000’s of strangers be it at workshops/support groups I facilitate or presenting at International conferences
  • dancing soloto Bollywood music in bathroom/living room /dancing with friends – no problem with any of that. But holding another guy’s (who’s not my spouse) hands and move in sync to music – BIG PROBLEM.I remember the 1st few weeks of my intro course to Salsa- whilst the instructors were on about the ‘frame’ we had to maintain- I had to work on not shaking/trembling & overcoming the feeling of wanting to run out of the room to a safe space. Add wearing pointed heels which I hated and still do(if you know me- I chose comfort over beauty every time & believe that sneakers, sandals & flip flops are mankind's best inventions) – it was another first in my life to buy heels not just to walk but trying to dance ‘gracefully’(insert rolling eyes emoticon here!!)- SO MORE BIG PROBLEMS!!! Talk about stepping out of one’s comfort zone- this was more like free falling into an abyss!
          2.   SELF CARE
For me being in the job that I’m in, and the person that I’m -I strive to be empathetic to all the stress that my clients/friends/family are facing-it takes a lot out of me emotionally and physically – I knew that I needed a space where I could be just myself- where I’m not a social worker, mental health professional, wife, sister or mother – just somebody who is trying to learn something new even though it scares the s#@*t out of her!! It’s about self care. After a year of being on this journey, it’s now my stress buster- I make time for salsa-it’s one of my self-care routines where I get to move(gracefully or not) to soulful music and in the company of adults who want nothing else from than me than to have a good time! And I have made some great friends for life there which is an added bonus given that our lifestyles weren’t conducive for socializing opportunities.

          3. INCLUSIVITY
The first thing that always makes a good first impression on me be it people, organizations or community is how ‘inclusive’ or ‘multicultural’ they are. I’m so impressed with the diverse group from all races and ethnicity that come to our dance studio. I’m also impressed with the sense of community the dance studio Soul2Sole (https://soul2sole.ca/) fosters by having free inclusive events open to the community members throughout the summer months at the Streetsville community square. If you are passing by or accidentally see me waddling like a duck in any promotional picture or video- just ignore that and remember that I was having a great time whilst waddling and felt awesome belonging to this dance community.😊😊😊

ARE YOU FILLING OR DIPPING?

Are you a bucket filler or a bucket dipper?

For those unfamiliar with the terms - simply put - it is the concept taught to kids at school that we all carry invisible buckets of feelings. When we use our dipper to fill another person's bucket - which may be a kind word or gesture- we set about enhancing not only the other person's sense of worth but also fill our own buckets. On the other hand, a person with an empty or half filled bucket may use the dipper to dip into some one else's bucket which maybe saying unkind, hurtful or mean things. This may not only decrease the other person's positive emotions but also diminishes ourselves.
Sounds simple to understand but how many of us pause to think or reflect about how after every interaction with another human being be it in your personal or professional space or even with members of society at large if we have filled or dipped into someone's bucket????

In my professional world, when working with caregivers of people living with dementia- we reiterate how 'emotional awareness' is a persisting asset till the end. The emphasis for caregivers is that people with dementia may forget the words that was said to them but may remember 'how they were made to feel'. And so how important it was to be mindful of every interaction they had with their loved ones with dementia, to be aware of how and what they communicated and what feelings it engendered in the person living with dementia.
So brain disease or not- it's not hard to fathom why human beings tend to latch on to feelings that arise out of either a pleasant or unpleasant interaction with others they interact with long after the incident is over.
It's fascinating how human brains are like a Velcro for negative memories and like a non stick or Teflon for positive memories.

The underlying need of every human being is to be accepted, liked or even better loved by others.

When we like the person we are interacting with, bucket filling happens effortlessly. It's when we are in disagreement with another individual that we tend to dip intentionally or unintentionally.
We need to be mindful of most (if not all)interactions we have with another person as to what are the feelings we are leaving the other person with because of what we said or did. Even 'not communicating' is a response too and we may have different reasons why we may do it - be it to establish boundaries or fiercely guard our personal space. But at times it might be a message that the other person doesn't matter much or you can take them for granted.

How long do we think we are going to  be walking on this earth? Not long- the sooner we get that, the easier it is to be more compassionate to each other. If we cannot add to someone's bucket we must be cognizant of at least not depleting their buckets. Just like a full bucket gives us strength and confidence and hope, an empty bucket saps us of our energy and undermines our will.

So, everyday we are faced with a choice- we can fill buckets or dip - an important choice that profoundly affects our outlook, our choices and relationships- so choose wisely!!!

If you can't fill -don't dip!!

UNWRITTEN LETTERS TO MY DAUGHTER

Dear Anvita

As you turn 12, I want to write about things that I've always tried to get across to you in many ways all these years.

I realize that as you are becoming your own person, not just pretty but a 'pretty strong' young girl- being a female I see how people around you - be it friends, family or society constantly (knowingly or unknowingly) try to condition you that you are a girl/female and that you need to feel/do/talk a certain way. I have tried my best to tell you otherwise and as you are about to become a teen - here are some thoughts for you to ponder, process and practice !!

1.First and foremost- want to tell you that unlike what Indian or many cultures prefer or perpetuate- I always wanted my first born child to be a female and was delighted when I learnt about you. A girl with whom I would experience the same closeness I felt with my own mother, a girl with an independent mind and knows what she is doing, a girl who is kind and strong. So I tell you - we were ecstatic when our prayers were answered. You've been and still are a great role model for your brother and hope you continue to grow and evolve and be always beautiful from the inside!!!

2.You may not know or realize - not once in these 12 years I've asked you to do a chore or learn something because you are a female- which was a conscious effort on my part - to spare you from what I've been exposed to!! I'd 've asked or nudged you because I want you to have life skills that would enable you to survive or adapt anywhere that you would choose to be. So don't do anything because that's what girls/females are 'supposed' to do.

3.Don't follow rituals/participate in activities cos you are expected to as a female if it doesn't make sense because I'm pretty sure they are man made or woman made - a learnt behaviour which  can be easily 'un made or unlearnt'. You don't have to prove anything to anyone or anybody by doing any of it.

4.Don't let anyone tell you that you need to look/dress a certain way because you are a female.Eat,sleep or exercise right in order to be healthy not to subscribe to how society thinks you ought to be. Be free to experiment with how you dress or look as long as it adds to your confidence, is safe for your body, makes you feel good about how/who you are!!

5.Don't let anyone tell you what you do or how you do things are  unfeminine or not graceful - there's no such thing!!
Learn to cook, play soccer, drive, sew,be creative or change tires -just do whatever you want to do as long as you are experiencing fun, get joy out of it or learning something new.

6.Feel free to pursue your passion - be it to be an animation artist(like you are saying right now),teacher or an engineer or explore space - go for whatever lights up the fire in your belly. Remember the Carl Sagan video we watched. Life is short and precious, it is important to spend your life being with the right people, being in a career that excites you and doing things that is not just about earning money.

7.Develop nurturing relationships and  friendships with others (doesn't matter what language, skin colour, race or religion they come from) but rather with those who respect you, treat you right, you can learn from and be inspired-those with whom you can reciprocate all those. Never settle for less !!!

8.Call people out when others around you perpetuate gender based stereotypes particularly when you are made to be part of that stereotyping.    In all the jobs I've had so far in 5 different countries - I have noticed that the top Management staff has always been females- I'm sure they didn't subscribe to these either and just believed in themselves to get to where they are.

'Fairy tale retold' assignment
9.Remember no job is just a man's job and you should never be the 'damsel in distress' - you may have seen me climbing ladders, fixing stuff at home, think about pros and cons and make decisions as much as Daddy does- sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the circumstances. It's not about male and female roles and expectations- it's about getting things done individually or as a team!!!

I felt so proud when in grade 5 - you had a different take on Rapunzel for your 'Fairy tale retold' classroom assignment. She was not in the ivory tower but rather outside fighting off the evil people. She didn't have long hair but a short, colorful chic hairstyle you conceived for her.
You just GO GIRL -just dream and work hard -the sky or should I say 'space' is your limit!!

10.Lastly don't forget about self care because girls/females/women tend to put others needs, wants, desires ahead of theirs most of the time coupled with feeling guilty for taking care of oneself. This is a lesson I have learnt (still learning) pretty late in life but I'd rather you didn't. It is wonderful to be kind, caring and compassionate to others but be sure to be those to yourself as well!!!

As you grow,I hope to be there for you whenever and however you need me in different roles - mom, friend, counsellor, confidante, laughing companion, partner in crime for trying out new things, sharing clothes or accessories, serial hugger- just let me know!!

Lots of love,hugs,kisses and pride!
Mom

FOR BETTER OR WORSE

Marriage is not for everyone. It takes special talents, skills, strategies to stay married to another adult your entire life. As we are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary today, 18 years of knowing each other (feels like a lifetime)- I was reflecting on how we have made it work this far without strangling each other, keep the war and conflicts to the minimum [it's always good to dream big 😉 ] and managed to keep the love, peace and all emotions going(in some type/form or way)!!

Some highlights that seem to work
  1.    Marriage is not for the fainthearted- you need a sturdy and strong heart. For the multiple heartaches that might occur along the way- you need a solid one that will regrow itself not from stem cells/a donor heart but from repeated acts of kindness, loyalty and utter faith in the relationship.
  2.      Marriage is not for the short or far sighted people -it requires a special vision to look closely and etch in your memories all the little and big things that this person does that warms up your heart. Also to 'look away' or turn a blind eye to the kind of things that totally drives you up the wall or running for the hills. For eg: not putting things back to its rightful place, procrastinating certain 'to do' items, 'corner syndrome'(will not go into details to keep the peace I was referring to earlier).
  3.     Marriage is not for the hard of hearing -it requires special hearing skills to listen to what the other person is saying (or not saying), be present in the moment to hear their hopes, dreams(broken/intact), the ability to tune out all the unnecessary noise that comes from your partner(including snores!!) when they turn from human to an alien you don't recognise.
  4.       Marriage is not for the serious minded -you require a sense of humour (actually loads of it) for being able to laugh with each other, at times at each other or at the absurdity of it all. Sometimes being able to laugh away the multiple curve balls that life would keep throwing at you both or even catch them together as a team or to fling them far away into outer space(sometimes 'denial' helps too 😉)
  5.      Marriage is not for the people with reduced spatial abilities -it requires being able to be very close, feeling connected and yet when everyday demands of life, work, technology, parenting might wedge a gap - being able to hang onto each other (even if it's just some fingers you are clutching instead of an entire hand) and resisting the tendency to push/grow away from each other. It's also having the ability to give space to the other person to be their own self, to be valued, appreciated and validated by friends, family or others, pursue their interests or hobbies - anything that will keep the sanity and peace(see how many times I have referred to the word 'peace').
  6.     Marriage is not for those who have photographic memories - people who hang onto hurts, keep looking back in time, haul heavy emotional baggage all the time and keep scratching that wound from the past. That constant looking back would not only stop you from knowing where you are going but you'd also end with a wound that won't heal!! 'Selective memories' in marriage goes a long way acting as glue to cement that bond. (Note to hubby - I hope you don't forget what I said we would do if and when we make it to the 25th anniversary!!)
  7.   Marriage is for those who have accountability or ownership  and clear boundaries- knowing what you invested or put into that relationship, being able to take responsibility for the choices we make(good or bad), and the consequences that come with everyone of those choices or actions we have made.
  8.     Marriage is for the brave and the adventurous - for those who don't maintain check lists of to do items on the relationship menu, who can seize the moment. It is also for those who don't mind going on a crazy ride, taking small steps. It is about learning to trust the journey, even if you don't understand it at all times!
  9.     Marriage or being married is a commitment, a feeling, it's an emotion-it's both about giving and taking. As someone wisely said -"give your best to each other, not your leftovers after you've given your best to everyone else in marriage"!
  10.      Marriage is the safe space, or shelter or that rock you can crawl into when the whole world is plotting against you, when your kids turn into aliens or monsters, family members, relatives or friends behave 'unfamily' like or unfriendly.

Such useful coping strategies come in handy to overcome 'the urge to strangle' overwhelms myself :)

                               Ohhhhhh..those STEPS!!!

All my closest family and friends know how I’ve not been very fond of driving. Might be due to the fact that I learnt driving in the last few years – I don’t feel like I have the expertise or have the finer skills that come with years of driving experience. It worked out well that hubby loves to drive & I like to be in the passenger seat soaking in the views and enjoying the music during long road trips. Learning to drive after you are an adult is difficult cos there’s so much baggage, fear and anxiety of all the things that could go catastrophically wrong.
For survival reasons,  I’ve been driving around the bare minimum like picking and dropping kids, commuting to the train station and nearby places. For example – I can drive from to the train station (A), drive to my kids schools(B), shops or libraries(C) and come back home without being petrified. Simply put I can easily do A to B to C.But I have a nervous breakdown if I have to do option 2 cos changing destinations means driving through unknown routes lanes and changing lanes means mini heart attack. And if I saw a highway sign when I was driving on smaller lanes, then it would mean a full blown panic attack and seizure!!!!
(All expert drivers – you can stop reading now cos you won’t be able to empathise with what I’m saying & might even consider it silly!!).

When that highway sign looms large, I can physically feel the panic in my stomach building up, my heart racing and I would do anything to avoid going anywhere near the highway. Its funny how in all other aspects of my life –anxiety/panic is an alien concept for myself. Be it presenting before 1000’s of strangers, making decisions in split seconds under high pressure situations or going for job interviews- I’m the epitome of calm and cool- the more stressful the challenges- the better I think & deliver or solve it- in fact I love the adrenaline that comes with such situations & I thrive on dealing with it. But when it comes to lane changing and highway driving –I’m a complete mess. Many people have been unhelpful when they say things like “You don’t know what you are missing out”(as if I don’t know how 2-3 hour commutes feel like on my way to work and back in public transit),”It’s soo easy”(easy for you but not for me),”You just need to try”(as if I haven’t already)!!!

What they didn’t understand is I’ve been conditioned to fear and be scared of driving on the roads with not just one but two unnatural road accident related deaths of my family members who died very young-it’s a baggage you cannot so easily discard- the perennial fear of either killing someone else or getting killed cos of my driving plays out like a movie in my mind every time I attempt it.
One of my dear friends who understands the source of my fear(love her for not judging me for it) was equally concerned about how much travelling in public transit reduced the time I get to spend with my family during a work day.She has been relentlessly egging me on to drive on the highway for several months. She and her husband kept working on my conditioned fear, offering support & even sat with me(bravely!!)to talk me through the panic symptoms when I got on a highway with a good dose of humor.
Change is not easy but I knew something had to change if I wanted more work-life balance.

This picture always helps me to give perspective to change things if they are not working well for me.
I knew I was now on step 3 and just had to slowly move up the steps one at a time. Hanging on to the baggage is only limiting what could be a better situation for myself. I set myself a deadline for October when I wanted to drive on the highway to work and back. I have been torturing hubby and my kids for the past several weeks making them reluctant passengers during trial runs on weekends to my new work place work trying to gain mastery over lane changing. October 3rd was the D day and I unleashed myself from decades of painful memories, fear and anxiety by driving to work and back. Can't tell you the exhilaration I felt when I parked on that day!!!

And happy to say that it is now 2 weeks of driving to work driving on the highway and instead of a 2 hour commute through multiple buses/trains/walking – now I’m reaching home within 45 minutes. And I’m thankful and ever so grateful to my family and my close friends who have been supporting me to let me get here.
I’m ALIVE and so are others so far- LOL 

I feel like I’ve gotten so much of my life back and the feeling of being on the top step is unparalleled!! So the next time you are dreading change, check where you are on the flight of  steps and take one step at a time and if you persist without giving up you will also eventually get to the top!!!
UPDATE:
Since I started driving in October - have clocked 18000 kms and I've been going places(even remote destinations) and have actually started enjoying driving.Never thought that day would come when I'd say it :)

YOU ARE GOING TO COLOUR WHAT AGAIN??

Well Anvita turned 11 day today. A few weeks ago - we found this 3 page letter on  our bed. A well thought out letter written by a soon to be 11 year old. Not surprising at all cos I love to write as did my mom,her father was a writer/poet(on my maternal side of the family we have a genetic predisposition for the arts, creative stuff and writing). Anvita often leaves love notes & essays at all places in the house(which I have a habit of preserving cos I think they are valuable & precious)😍

This particular note+ letter had her birthday wish list. We are quite a no nonsense family - we don't beat around the bush- we get straight to the point!!
My sensible, practical, fun loving daughter who loved sweatpants and shorts to wearing dresses, who preferred to play basketball/soccer to playing houses asking to colour her hair???
I was taken back by item no 1 on her list. 😱There was no way I was going to let my 10 year old (more like going on 20) daughter to make a choice that could cause damage to her lovely hair- not at least when she is still living under our roof!!

This list was followed by a letter of persuasion - a letter in which she had carefully listed out all her accomplishments throughout the year and justifying how she has earned it & persuading us to agree to her wish(es)!

On one hand - I'm thoroughly amused that she has an independent mind and is very clear on what she wants. Every year she tells us in advance how she wants to celebrate her birthday - for instance once she wanted to invite her friends, then another time it was a slumber party. Yet another year she wanted to explore an amusement park. She has been doing that since the time she could talk!! We let her make her choice and we do our best to honour it within our means.
This time around - it was hard to agree to what she wanted. She's a tween and I'm already dreading how teenage would look like if this is a sign of things to come. We had a choice - go outright & say NO to her unreasonable demand which as parents we believe is harmful for her hair and body. But it didn't feel right to crush her spirit,or quell her attempts at exploring, experimenting and expressing her individuality. In the very least I thought it merited a thorough conversation with her - a discussion on the pros and cons.Even though I couldn't completely convince her even with the help of Dr.Google - she seemed to appreciate the fact that I treated her as her own person,an individual who has the right to think, make choices and think about consequences and that her opinion is valuable too. I must admit my daughter has the makings of a lawyer and a master negotiator- at one point she almost convinced me as to how the tip of the hair are dead cells and that technically she wasn't causing any harm to herself and that in the worst case she could trim the hair in 6 months time and erase all signs of it if it turned out to be a mistake.

Somehow this bout I won and  managed to dissuade her from making that choice.
Each day I'm proud of the little person that she is turning into. But I/we need to accept that there might be many more such battles to come in our parenting journey and colouring her hair pink/brown might be the least of my worries then!!!
Here's to many more such letters and discussions and non violent fights/arguments(and parental wins??😜)

Happy 11th birthday sweetheart and hope all your assertiveness happens when you are facing the big bad world outside!!😜👍✋🏻
Cheers
Mom.

                                       10 BENEFITS TO HAVING KIDS

Given the way our lives are fast forwarding in this fast digital age at break neck speed - many young couples are rethinking having kids or postponing having them- I have some thoughts for you to mull over!!

In spite of what everyone warns you about that your life is complete (or finished) when you have kids - it’s not all that bad. Even though there might be some(or several) occasions that even if for  a few hours you might’ve (atleast I have many times)felt like pawning them off to your neighbors or others - for the most part-  it is an enlightening experience about who you are as a person, your fears, your anxieties, your baggage and how you lead them to be a better version of yourselves.

Having a kid or two means you are declaring to the world that you are not completely invested in yourselves and that you are able to put the needs of another person who is smaller, younger and more vulnerable than yourself above that of your own.

Really there are real advantages to having kids-I 'kid' you not ;)

The following are insights culled from my own experience as a parent - some of which might be eye openers for you and make you think about parenting in a new light altogether(eye roll!!)

  1. Kids are good couriers- they will fetch you stuff that you have kept in the top floors or other rooms that you are too lazy to get it yourselves
  2. Kids are good detectives - they know the junk that you ‘ve bought and remember where exactly you stored(read:hidden) them
  3. Kids are  good substitute for alarms- they would know exactly how and when to wake you on the weekend when you are trying to sleep for a little longer.A caveat -their alarm capabilities seem to decline, diminish or disappear altogether during weekdays and it's not easy waking up a child to get ready for school!!
  4. Having 2 kids instead of 1 gives you the opportunity to play multiple roles of Judge, match referee, bouncer and dispenser of justice more often than you like!
  5. Having kids teaches you to hone your multitasking skills and take it to a different level altogether like for instance when making phone calls and cooking and keeping an eye on the fight that is brewing between your kids before it gets bloody or violent.
  6. Having kids elevates your negotiating and bargaining skills to an all time high cos they will not take ‘No’ for an answer that easily.
  7. Having kids makes you wary of the words ‘WHY’ CAN’T I?’ cos of the number of times that word would crop up in your entire span of parenting career. So that in turn would lead to you improve your conversation skills by anticipating ‘trap questions’ and be prepared ahead of time with comebacks!
  8. Having kids creates in you a new found respect for your parents who have done it so many more times than yourselves(in my case 7 cos my parents had 7 of us!!! -I often wonder how they stayed married or none of us ended up in prison or an asylum)
  9. Kids make you realize that size is of no consequence and in fact size doesn’t matter at all when it comes to getting things accomplished(?their way). They have inbuilt radars for detecting vulnerabilities and moments of weaknesses in parents or other adults.
  10. Kids are good witnesses for fights that you have with your spouse-they come in handy during the trial and prosecution!

I hope that this list is fast tracking you on your way to making babies sooner than later !!! LOL!

ONE MORE DAY

Phew –it’s been a stressful past couple of weeks/months/years- I can’t even keep track of how many.
We as a family have seen and faced so many tragedies and have learnt many a life lessons and the learning never seems to stop.I’m at that stage in life where I wished these life lessons will stop!!!
We take nothing for granted, we count our blessings, live in the moment and grateful for even small things cos life is so short and unpredictable. We are always dealing with Plan B,C or D- never Plan A- in fact we don’t even make plan A precisely for the same reason- they go awry.

With a series of serious health setbacks on both Ravi’s and my side of the family all happening at the same time-we couldn’t just contemplate how things could go so badly wrong and that too all at the same time!! The only way we know to cope is just ‘keep on carrying on’ one more day and focus on the things that we had control over than those we didn’t. So when Ravi had to leave for India on a family emergency, I was trying my damnedest to keep my sanity and trying to get on with work and home routines (which is not easy with 2 kids, the long travel & the schedules I keep). Last Friday-things went pear shaped when I was in the midst of packing up my office stuff for a move into another location and   I get a message from my sister in India that my mother who is in the late stages of dementia was unresponsive, had stopped breathing and they were rushing her to hospital in an ambulance. Holding it all together for so long I broke down and I wasn’t ready yet to say good bye to my mother. Somehow I got through the packing(if you consider dumping stuff into boxes as packing), made the long journey home after picking my kids and had a night of bawling and mourning the reality of what was about to happen to my mom.

We don’t have family here in Canada but I’m blessed to have very few but genuine friends who have stood by me, watch out for me (even when I try to hide from mankind when shit piles up).I was touched when intuitively they call to find out how I’m holding up in Ravi’s absence and hearing about my mom, and without missing a beat offer to take care of my kids if I had to leave for India on an emergency. One of my dear friends even dropped in home last evening just to make sure and to let me know I wasn’t alone. Can’t tell you what it means to know that you are all there to hold me when I’m falling – in spite of everything I count my blessings one more time!!

When I visited my mom in India in February this year– even though my mom didn’t know my name, what our relationship was, she recognised me immediately, smiled and responded so well with tapping her feet whenever I sang to her. That was our lingering bond – our love of music- when everything else was fading from her brain. I knew I could still reach her when I sang to her all her favorite songs from the past. I knew she felt it when I hugged her, held her tightly and stroked her face and she rewarded me with a toothless smile. That gave me joy and I was content to take whatever I could in that moment –so what if she didn’t know my name or that I was her daughter- she felt my love- that was good enough for me!!!!

But ever since my mom had a fall and a fracture a couple of weeks ago-we’ve been losing her bit by bit and it was as if she was retreating into another world and there was absolutely no response from her. She stopped eating, she was hardly breathing, her body failing her and all our interactions one sided. Every phone call, every update from my family in India – I knew this was not going well. I know Dementia in all its forms- I understand the disease in and out- this is what I do for a living – I know it’s a terminal disease but yet when I know that I’m about to lose my mom-I feel selfish when I want her to linger on. I want to know that she is physically around and I can still sing to her and hear her respond. I still want to tell her even though she might not understand- all that I’m doing to make this disease easier for the caregivers whose burden I truly understand. I want her to feel proud of my accomplishments and let her know that her very disease has been a life changing experience for all of us and I’d keep passionately fighting for making an impact in society even in the smallest way I can. I’m unable to let go of her presence in my life at this point (I know I’ll never be ready) LLL

As I was waiting for my family to keep me posted & I was making plans to go to India, relatives were informed- I receive a call from my brother yesterday night. From not breathing, no pulse, extremely low blood pressure, and near death experience- my mom came around and started responding to treatment. It was a medical miracle of all sorts!!!

My mother has always been a fighter and that’s what she had always taught us- to keep digging & fighting despite all odds, never giving up and even with death staring her in the face- she is fighting back. When I called this morning to speak with my brother who was in the hospital with her – he put the phone to her ear-I sang to her- sang all the songs that she used to ask me to sing whenever she was feeling low. She mumbled back and joined me and even tried to sing a few words. My brother told me she was all excited, smiling and back to tapping her feet and the oxygen mask and the tubes out of her body is not about to stop her!!!

I believe in miracles and we all just experienced one- gives me hope to carry on one more day JJJ

WHAT'S IN A NAME??

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet".- William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

My actual first name is Jayasudha- strike that- my mom had originally named me Sudha when I was born. She had said that even as a 3 year old I had a mind of my own!! (well no surprises there). She had told me that inspired by the dance moves of a famous South Indian movie star then by the name Jayasudha and whose moves I used to imitate I informed my kindergarten teacher  that my name was Jayasudha-a name which means in Sanskrit -'Sweet victory'(Jaya= victory & Sudha=sweet nectar)- maybe I should turn into a honey bee right now!
So the name stuck and became part of my official identity all through my school,College and Universities in India- everyone knew me as Jayasudha.

Since marriage I have lived in different parts of the globe.I'm quite aware that people from other parts of the world are not exposed to double barrelled Sanskrit based Indian first names. Well then I thought- I'll make everyone's life easier by identifying myself as just Sudha with it just being 2 syllables & so it would not be so complicated to pronounce.

But then I now realize it's not always that simple-even this is not without its share of moments of fun. Now would be  a good time to tell you that I have a glass wall in my office which I treat as my amusement corner & where I post stuff which makes me chuckle.

I started collecting or rather writing down how many ways people(staff/ clients/other professionals) can slaughter my name.
Check out the picture - you 'll know how many..and the list is nowhere near exhaustive!

What surprises or stumps me most is when professionals responding to emails I've sent with my name spelt out clearly still write back to an alias that is not even remotely close to my name !!!! How they do that is beyond me - seriously!

Anyway I don't get offended at all coz I'm conscious that I might have similar challenges if someone asked me to pronounce names like 'Stelios Giannakopolous','Sieb Djikstra','Yakubu Aiyegbeni','Stig Inge Bjornebeye' and 'Piotr Swierczewski' names which I didn't have to spell or say whilst growing up!!!

So I'd rather enjoy the humor my name leads to. After all I'm supposed to be this sweet person or something.

Can I quit...being a parent for a day ??

I'm not asking much..just one day off from an unrelenting schedule of being  a parent - of not being responsible for two young lives, not being the referee between two warring kids, not being the unpaid driver picking/dropping the kids to and from school, after school, beyond school/outer space activities..a break from having to get up early in the morning, trying to pack up several boxes of food for the kids/adults,from not having to look for matching socks, clothes or underwear from all over the place,of trying to get them to cram some edible humanly food before they leave, from not worrying about the class assignments they need to do or milestones they need to reach,or getting them to sleep at earthly hours. In essence I'm asking for not being a teacher/detective/chef/ cleaner/ chauffeur/counselor or not being a Parent(all rolled into one) just for a day!!

In this regard,I'd like to point put that BC(Before Christ)& AD(After Death/anno domini) are incorrect for timelines.Left to me I would devise dating system or timelines like this

BC or AC...Life - Before Children(BC) and After Children(AC)

I think you may want to laugh, cry or nod your head but let me tell you how it all goes ...
You know I can be sure that in the short time I'm not around and if there's no sound or sign of my little one even for a few seconds -one or more of the following has happened:

  1. He has taken out the ironing spray and sprayed all the furniture, books and clothes with them
  2. He has taken my handbag from the top of the table, unzipped it,gotten the car key out, stepped out into the backyard, reached the garage and turned on the car!!
  3. He has taken the dustbin, climbed on it,reached for the fruit and butter knife on the counter top and tried to cut them by himself
  4. He has opened the tap in the kitchen (by climbing on the chair in the kitchen nook) and tried to wash the vessels all by himself spraying the entire kitchen in this process
  5. He has taken his sister's tubs of different colors of glitter from her craft box and tried to be helpful by mixing them all together - on the floor !!!
  6. He has taken the stamp and stamped all his blue car designs on the freshly painted wall :(
  7. He has pulled out the leaves from the mint plant and watered the tomato plant to death !!
  8. He has emptied/thrown all the cheerios on the floor and made interesting designs out of them
  9. He has mastered the art of unrolling the toilet rolls in the short time he goes to the toilet for a pee..
  10. He has reached for the toolbox, gotten out the screwdriver, the batteries and tried to 'fick'(fix as he says) his Thomas train..
  11. He has opened a bottle of water and poured it all on the new pro back support mattress(making the mattress look like it needs some support right now!)
As you can see, I have in my son the makings of a launderer, driver, acrobat, chef, painter, graffiti artist, plumber, gardener and electrician all rolled into one. From the moment he's awake and till he falls into bed exhausted - I do think that I'm in the midst of an ongoing natural calamity -he's like a mini tornado,2.5 years old,a little over 3 feet tall, and in constant motion and a bundle of energy and unending activity...As a professional I know that he is perfectly normal, his activity levels, his natural curiosity are a perfect accompaniment to his growing brain..as a parent -well I need to specialize in Buddhism or Zen meditation - so I can calmly smile and understand these are the rewards of parenting - the good, the bad and the ugly !!

Not to be outdone in creativity, zeal or action,my 8 year old daughter chips in with her talent too...there's this pile of freshly laundered clothes on the floor which she tells me are all the costumes that were part of her dress up and dance routines when she changed from Cinderella to witch and into Cleopatra(BTW she ropes in her little brother to be Prince Charming with his set of costumes & accessories too!!).There's food crumbs, inside, outside,in the middle of the sofa, orange peels from ages ago under the bed(where she had decided to hide from her little brother to read and eat),cardboard boxes that she has painted and turned into hideouts or vehicles and tents, different colored papers cut out and painted with secret codes and games that she has devised to play with her friends, strange looking colored fruit concoction which she made(inspired by a recipe she read in a magazine) inside the freezer..scraps of notes everywhere that she has written to friends and family including notes to the fairies and painted her face and body(sometimes her brother's too) like they were part of the Avatar movie cast!!
If counting to ten, taking deep breaths doesn't work,I try cleaning the house(like a woman possessed) which strangely calms me down  or write a blog(like I'm doing now) or even repeat the phrase"This too will pass on" to myself. At times I can adoringly look at their pictures when they were inside my tummy(was life much better then? -I'm not sure),or them smiling/talking innocently in their sleep after they came outside,or watch their dance videos, read my daughter's 'I love you' notes and handmade cards,or even recollect fondly the unconditional hugs and kisses I get.I know I must and I do cherish all these memories - the hysterical, the ominous, the funny, the scary and the heart warming ones because soon they would grow up and might not be looking out for Momma when they get hurt(right now they believe I'm Superwoman and I can kiss it all better)..
So may be I might not get my breaks,my leave applications from being a parent might not get granted,my requests for abstaining from parental duty are null and void and I will continue to rant, ventilate, would want to fast forward the parenting thing as this job gets interesting and challenging by the day- but I wouldn't trade being a parent for any job in the world .And I promise I would try my damnedest as I've to constantly 'up' my game to stay on par(if not on top) of this parenting puzzle and make the pieces fit.

Are you eating thinking right ?

A colleague and I were recently discussing about using this chart with our clients during counselling(for more info and decoding the platter click here → Mind platter). And I was telling myself maybe I should start with checking off how many portions I was consuming before I suggested someone else should do it. So this is how it went
  1. Sleep time - A big ✓ (do I even need to explain that ? - I think not)
  2. Focus time - ✓( I can do hours and hours of reading or learning or concentrate - I actually get a 'high' when I do these - so I'm thinking I'm getting extra points here :) )
  3. Time in - ✓(being trained in Mental health, that's what I do for a living - dealing with emotions and feelings - so its like a home run)
  4. Play time - ✓ (if that playing includes all that which we play on gadgets or with our kids -I'm in the game still)
  5. Down time - ✓(this happens to me like a fish takes to water - I can find countless things not to do and to just laze and think about - like the Arctic expedition or the Kenyan safari  I might go or the holidays I might take some day in the Bahamas or Down Under(hope hubby reads this list accidentally :)I can just go on with that list with very little prompting)
  6. Connecting time  - ✓(oh yes - I'm totally connected to my family, friends, phone, books, nature)
  7. Physical time -???????????????????
That last one on the list right there is a slippery slope for me because the explanation given was something like

"When we move our bodies, aerobically if possible, which strengthens the brain in many ways"...

Hmm....I'm wondering does it include
  • all the acrobatic ways I try to reach for the jar on the top shelf in the closet or
  • the countless number of times I go up and down the stairs in the house to retrieve stuff from each floor? or
  • how I contort my body trying to balance a few books, whilst trying to push my 2.5 year old son in the stroller & maneuvering my way through the maze like pathways in the library & still managing to open the door ? or
  • the number of times I've tried to run like the wind to catch the bus before it left the stop or
  • run behind my kids just stopping them from dropping that precious vase from the past ? or
  • even darting across the road when the pedestrian crossing timer is about to touch 'zero' or
  • going round in circles like Tom & Jerry during the morning school & office run on weekdays or
  • does the aerobics and dance class I've been to in my past life count ??? or
  • Would lying on the grass and gazing at the sky and cloud spotting be equal to aerobically moving my brain muscles????
If all those count - then yes I can proclaim my stake to being a 'physically active' person...

But who am I kidding here ?....I've never been fond of going to the gym or engaging in that imaginative walking & running or pretending to be on an incline on the treadmill....I wear yoga pants but not because I do or like yoga - its because I like them as they are very very comfortable to wear..I like to eat all kinds of sensible/edible/tasty/colorful food and I don't ever make the mistake of counting the calories at all - I've NEVER ever engaged in a single diet or even fasted for any thing in my entire life - in my mind - its 'just this one life' and 'living life with regrets' and 'what ifs' is not my cup of tea...(there I mentioned a drink again..:)..I'm a foodie through and through- luckily for me - my hyperactive brain metabolizes my calories & I don't put on much weight - that's my theory in any case..:)))

The point here is I really need to work on the physical fitness part- that necessary evil or taboo word - however you may call it - its still unpalatable I guess!..I'm sure many of you are just like me justifying why you are not finding the time to exercise and that life's very busy to take some time out to work out - as for me - no amount of reasoning, giving excuses of not finding time is going to cut ice with my logical brain.I can't kid myself really.I'm too insightful for that!...
I do find it very inspiring when I see all the people working out and posting status on social media like "At the gym working out"(would people go there for any other reason I don't know - anyway that's beside the point). But for me - it just stops with 'getting inspired' stage but 'not acting on it' phase.

Physical fitness is not over rated & taking an hour or even 1/2 hour out of 24 hours in a day is not too much to ask for in order to be healthy in the long run - so as I'll be telling my clients - maintain a diary, record your little achievements no matter, take one step at a time to eventually walking a mile or even a marathon..(now that marathon's a bit too much for me to even visualize right now but I'll just throw it in there - it does sound good & making me feel fit already !!)..
Now I'm off to the park with my kids to help them get their physical time whilst ...hmm errr I take a book with me to read sitting on a bench...!!!

May be I will suddenly sprint like that Kenyan athlete (who almost always wins the marathon)once TOMORROW COMES :)

What is Happiness for me ?

People often use this word - Happiness in all kinds of contexts..to me -the means or the ways to be happy is more important than the end...at the end of each day I rate it a happy day when I start a creative process(today it is my writing, the last few days it was learning/mastery of singing my favorite song,on other days it is experimenting a new recipe, designing a pencil case for my daughter, prior to that setting up our house (BTW it's our the 11th move in 13 years) and I take it to its completion.

Sometimes it's just the chance to sit, relax and do nothing but admire nature - a splendid sunset,of waves rising and falling in the beach, the rustle of dry leaves, the smell of rain(just recently I learnt that it was a type of bacteria that caused it quashing my romantic heart),a full moon adorning the night sky...(lucky for my hubby who doesn't 've to spend much to make me happy!)
On other days its a chat,a message,a hearty conversation or catching up with a long lost friend or family member whom we leave behind in our hectic journey called life..and on another day it was the nice dinner my husband made when I was sick & lying and reading a book after a long time...

Happiness is also my squeals of excitement and victory dance seeing my 2.5 year old give up his precious milk bottles for cups, his nappies for the potty,it is also pride when my daughter comes up with a board game(which she devised, colored and made herself)...at times it is just looking at my niece's baby's innocent pictures of yawning,sleeping,smiling...oh there's lots...

Have you seen the meaning of being happy in kid's dictionaries ? - it doesn't take much at all - playing in the sand, splashing water, running wildly in an open space, getting paint on their face, feet and hands, going high on the swing and just seeing and playing with other kids...it's adults who mistakenly tend to pair happiness with goals, expectations, end results and numbers and often get the equations wrong!
There might be days when I don't get even one event checked from all the above but I keep these lists in my mind (& now I've written them down too) - they do help me to tide over those mental  cobwebs and sad droughts!

So what if you missed the morning train(because you slept a bit late because of the wonderful movie you watched late into the night),the house looked a bit like a dump yard(after all those those creative pursuits),forgot to turn off the hose pipe(because I was carried away with the little tomato plants that sprouted),the neighbors might 've gone a bit deaf(due to my serial killing of the song I was practicing),the kids are looking a bit messy & needing attention(because I'm trying  to complete this post :)..- all that matters is you have fun with whatever you set out to do and  just enjoy the ride...:)

Remember Life's not a checklist and Happiness is not a Destination - its the process and not the goal :)

What irks me in Facebook and some hi-tech solutions

After being in FB for nearly 6 years,I've understood/misunderstood/used/avoided/embraced and finally adapted to the joys of online communicating with friends, family and colleagues.Without this medium, probably I wouldn't 've known what had become of my best friend from childhood or who & where my cousins are or how age catches up with everybody no matter what they eat,say or do.And not to forget,I even learn everyday something of my interest from something someone posted.Even though all that's fine there are a few pet peeves of mine which cuts into my online joy and some ways of countering that .....read on if you are interested...

WHAT IRKS ME IN FACEBOOK AND SOME HI TECH SOLUTIONS

  1. If you are the 1st person to comment on a photo which gets more comments later- you are going to sorely regret your enthusiasam with the deluge of notifications that would follow (Need for 'I don't want to know what others are commenting on this'button)
  2. How do I tell u I liked your likes without me having to add another comment ?? (Need for 'Like the likes' button)
  3. How do I make those totally irrelevant comments & personal discussions disappear by just looking at them?(Need for 'Iris and facial expression recognition' button)
  4. How do I express my thanks for your time that you took to comment on something I posted without me commenting again & taking up more of your time and your newsfeed(No 'non verbal communication' button in Facebook yet)
  5. How to politely say some picture or news of mine is totally obsolete & that people can just skim thru it without saying anything so that I don't 've to say anything in return? (Timeline you are not helping the cause)
  6. How do I not get tagged in a totally irrelevant, where I'm not standing in,or understanding or misunderstanding a friend's picture or post (Need for 'Blaring alarm when you tag people unnecessarily' button) - to prove a point I tagged you all :ppppp
  7. How about people finish a status update instead of saying"Feeling sad".... & starting the guesswork by others asking 'Oh no what happened?''OMG are u okay???"" just spit it out or don't say it all..(Need for 'Auto fill/say it in full or it would get deleted' button or for incomplete status feed)
  8. How about you not putting me on the spot by testing our friendship online by asking me to share something you did & inviting me to apps & causes you believe in (Need for'Don't u know I like you no matter what' button)
  9. How to tell my online friends please only share your most relevant activity/thoughts /pictures and not every time you decide to cough, sleep or get bored(Locations and tags - you are not user friendly)
  10. How to tell those FB hypocrites and stalkers who say they don't like FB but diligently follow all the newsfeed to not sign up for it altogether- who are you kidding here ????(Need for ''FB Stalker'  'FB Hypocrite' button so I don't accept their friend request in a moment of weakness ;)))
  11. How to convey subtly that vacation/kids/family/friends/neighbors/pets colleagues pictures are perfectly welcome along as there are only 10 -15 pictures in it - please be mindful of the fact that human attention span is only 12 seconds!!!( Need for 'Don't u dare repeat/duplicate' button)
  12. How to like only  those posts/comments/ pictures by a friend(which made me think,laugh/happy) without them feeling we've ignored them every time they post(Need for an Universal Facebook 'Feeling secure' etiquette class/button)
  13. How to selectively not see the "delicious pictures of food prepared by friend/family member" in a friend's post ?(Need for "Don't rub it in" button  or "Food & restaurant pictures go invisible when I'm hungry" button)
  14. How to let people know that they need to write proper sentences and not use online acronyms that I can't keep up with - the only exceptions are 'LOL','ROFL' and 'LMAO' cos I know only them.Would you like it if I came to hug you & stopped halfway cos I know you'll understand it ???Also you can message me but not 'massage me - got it???(Need for 'Say it,mean it and spell it correctly' button)
  15. Why would you tell me what my friend or acquaintance liked or commented on someone else's profile -(FB you are such a gossip monger - Need for 'I don't care what others do on FB unless I want to care' button)!!!

And also finally getting more likes and comments is not indicative of a person's popularity- it just means that you know enough people who are also finding online relationship much less taxing than the ones in the real world & find it easier to communicate from behind a gadget & keep it going. You see - I don't 've to invite,be invited, dress up, cook or clean - i can just bombard you - oops sorry -just share my thoughts, feelings & pictures & keep u in the loop :)))

Mark Zuckerberg are you listening ?..

Adventure with my iPhone - till fate do us apart !!!

What a day it was yesterday.

On reaching home after my litle one's Dr appointment,I was mortified to find out that I had lost my precious iPhone. My iPhone is like my most prized possession - from checking mails,FB,listening to music, reading the news, playing games, taking countless pictures & videos of my kids, googling the world around me,creating little to do lists, finding the best price for stuff, to playing lullabies fro my kids - I do everything with this li'l device. And to realize that I've lost it,I felt as if I've lost my best friend. Even though I'm not a gadget freak,I really love how some of these little devices make our lives easier & keeps us linked with the outside world. More than anything else, it was a birthday gift from my hubby last year.I tell you that really hurt :((
Coming back to my lost phone,I called up the Dr's clinic & asked them if it got lost in their place & they replied in the negative. Kept calling my phone number & it went straight to voicemail which meant only one thing - someone has already taken it. Amidst all that angst, I remembered that I'd set up a feature in the iPhone(that is common to all iOS devices) which would locate the device if lost as it works on GPS technology. For this we need to have installed that software & linked the devices that we use. Right when I'd gotten it, I'd the good sense to have linked my iPhone to our iPad and also set a passcode without which my phone cannot be opened. So at least whoever took it cannot see my phone's contents. This feature also allows me to remotely wipe off all data should the phone be never found. When I clicked the Find my iPhone feature on the iPad- out popped a map showing where my phone was at that time - at the drop off spot near the train staton where I'd dropped my hubby off after the Dr's visit. I remember that I'd taken off my jacket because it was warm & looks like my phone had fallen off then.

Playing detective I could see exactly where it was at that very moment in real time- but technology can only help me so much.Whether I'd still find it by the time I drove back there- was anybody's guess. It was a case of so near and yet so far :(( Even if I did find it - cos it was a drop off spot, chances are another vehicle would have run over it already !!! Informed my hubby that I'd lost the phone & that I was going to drive back to see if it was still there. All he said was "Its ok if the phone's gone but drive safely". A strange reassuring calm descended upon me.

It was already gone - all I could do was make one final attempt to see if I could find it and so I drove back to the same place. As I feared - I could see no phone when I was nearing that spot - it was just empty. I asked an elderly gentleman sitting in a bench close by if he'd seen or heard anything & he was none the wiser.Dejected and heart broken,I was walking back to the car when a worker in a big truck across the street called out to me asking if I'd lost my phone.I couldn't believe my luck & it was the sweetest moment when he came across & handed me my phone. He said that he'd almost run over it when he was backing up..Thanked him & my lucky stars & came back with a happy grin on my face.I couldn't believe that there not a single scratch on my phone even though it had taken a nasty fall onto the hard concrete road.I'm totally sold on the fact that it is made of hardened glass (more specifically aluminosilicate glass for the scientifically minded) - oh boy - some glass that was  ;))..

I'd never know if that man had meant to keep it but aleast he gave it to me when he saw me. I've always believed in the phrase- "what belongs to you will come back to you if it was meant to be"..Was it luck, was it remaining calm & focussing on solving the problem or was it brilliant technology that showed me where I should look for it or the integrity of that man who gave it back which resulted in me getting my phone back or simply an interplay of all these factors? I don't know..

So my friends if you are an iPhone user like me and reading this article - please do link your phone to another iOS device even if its on another person's phone,iPad or Macbook - u never know when u'd be playing Sherlock Holmes to locate a missing phone. Here's the link how you do it - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8
And remember to keep that feature turned on ;)
